Student Members Workload and Recognition Policy

Section 1 - Background Information

(1) Senators are required to dedicate considerable time to fulfilling their obligations as Directors of ACU Limited. This is determined in large part by their obligations under Commonwealth legislation including the Corporations Act 2001 (Cth)Higher Education Support Act 2003 (Cth) and the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission Act 2012 (Cth) along with various State Acts of Parliament.

(2) Senators are required to be aware of the full range of the University’s activities and the issues (both internal and external) impacting upon the University’s operations to ensure that they are equipped to manage the risk profile, compliance framework and finances of the University and ACU Limited.

(3) Academic Board Members are required to contribute to the development and improvement of academic governance in the university. They are expected to possess an understanding of academic governance encompassing the student experience, policy, quality and innovation in learning and teaching, the Higher Education Standards Framework (Threshold Standards) 2021, academic governance related delegations and research.

(4) Student Members of Senate and the Academic Board are required to devote time to preparation and attendance at meetings, relevant consultation with students and the Student Associations and participation in annual planning and governance events. In addition, the Student Senator is required to participate in events such as graduation ceremonies within their respective campus.

(5) This Policy applies to students elected under Clause 13.2 of ACU’s Constitution and Statute 2.5 - The Academic Board.

Section 2 - Policy Statement

Student Member of Senate

(6) Pursuant to clause 13.2(j) of the Constitution, one student is elected to Senate in accordance with the University’s Statutes.

(7) Consistent with the relevant provisions of Statute 9 - Student Organisations, the University shall pay the Student Member of Senate an allowance equivalent to the allowance paid to Presidents of Campus Student Associations for the term of the Student Senator's tenure in office as determined by the Constitution and Statutes from time to time.

(8) Following the election of any new Student Member to Senate pursuant to clause 13.2(j) of the Constitution, the Legal, Assurance and Governance Directorate shall advise the Chief People Officer of the identity of that Student Member to enable the relevant allowance to be paid.

Student Members of the Academic Board

(9) Pursuant to Statute 2.5 - The Academic Board, two students are elected in accordance with the relevant Statutes.

(10) Consistent with the relevant provisions of Statute 9 - Student Organisations, the University shall pay each of the Student Members of the Academic Board an allowance equivalent to the allowance paid to Presidents of Campus Student Associations for the terms of the Student Members’ tenure in office as determined by the Statutes from time to time.

(11) Following the election of any new Student Member to the Academic Board pursuant to Statute 5.1 - Courses for Degrees, Diplomas and Other Awards, the Legal, Assurance and Governance Directorate shall advise the Chief People Officer of the identity of that Student Member to enable the relevant allowance to be paid.

Section 3 - Policy Purpose

(12) The purpose of this Policy is to ensure that appropriate recognition is given to elected Student Members of Senate and the Academic Board elected pursuant to clause 13.2(j) of the Constitution and Statute 2.5 - The Academic Board to enable them to prepare for, and make meaningful contributions to, the deliberations of Senate and the Academic Board.

Section 4 - Application of Policy

(13) This Policy applies to any student elected to Senate in accordance with Clause 13.2 (j) of the Constitution and to the Academic Board in accordance with Statute 2.5 - The Academic Board.

Section 5 - Roles and Responsibilities

(14) Senate is the Approval Authority for this Policy. The Chief Operating Officer is the Governing Authority for this Policy. The Director, Legal, Assurance and Governance is the Responsible Officer for this Policy.

Section 6 - Policy Review

(15) This Policy will be reviewed by Senate from time to time and not later than every three years. Unless otherwise indicated, this Policy will still apply beyond the review date.
